Russia’s TASS news agency says a company owned by the country’s richest man, Oleg Deripaska, has bought a vast swath of land in the United States, including the former Alaska real estate market, for more than $1bn.
The Russian investment bank Rosneft, which is part of the Russian government, is among several companies that bought land in recent years.
Rosneftegaz, which owns land in Alaska, is owned by Deripas $1 billion-plus wealth, TASS said.
A Russian man who owns a portion of TASS shares also owns a large chunk of the New York Jets team.
Russia’s Rosnefergaz is one of the most powerful companies in the country, which has been hit hard by Western sanctions on the country after Russia annexed the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea.
Russia has denied involvement in the annexation and has said it does not intend to meddle in the Ukraine conflict.
It has also denied that it controls TASS.
