The real estate agency in British Columbia that manages rental properties in the province has called for more renters to sign up and use the new BC Rent-A-Rent service.
The Vancouver Real Estate Association says its rental clients have been frustrated with the low vacancy rates in the Vancouver area and that the government is not providing enough rental housing.
It said it is not recommending rental homes be offered for rent, but rather, that people pay a monthly fee and rent for a fixed period of time.
“It’s just not enough to make this a sustainable option,” said Jennifer MacLeod, president of the BC RentA-Rooms Association.
MacLeod said the association has been trying to help tenants with rent and has been told the province will not provide them with a rental subsidy.
She said the government has made it clear that it is working on a solution.
Premier Christy Clark has been accused of not addressing the housing crisis and has also not done enough to help renters.
In a statement to the BC Legislature last week, Clark said there was a need for more rental housing in British Columbia.
However, the B.C. Association of Realtors says renters have been facing high vacancy rates and that B.D.C.’s rental market is still underdeveloped.
There are more than 20,000 units of rent-a-place currently available in B.L.C., which is the fourth-highest in Canada, according to B.R.A. data.
That figure is expected to rise as the province builds more housing.
