A Florida man was charged with animal cruelty after allegedly beating his girlfriend’s dog in a bid to keep it alive.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said it responded to a call from a woman in Tampa around 10 p.m. on Sunday about a pit bull that had been left alone with a man who lived nearby.
Deputies said the man was walking his dog when he encountered the dog.
When the man tried to pet the dog, the dog bit him and he fell on the ground.
The man said he grabbed the dog and began hitting the dog in the head with his fists, according to the Hillsborough Sheriff’s office.
When deputies arrived, they found the dog was still alive and laying on the grass.
Deputy Chief Deputy Greg Soper said the dog died on the way to the hospital.
Robert Stapleton said the woman and the man have been charged with cruelty to animals and aggravated battery on a police animal.
